Reimagining Financial Calculators with Calm, Confident Design

A pastel-themed, animated financial calculator suite — loans, mortgages, retirement, and more — built to make everyday money math feel calm instead of clinical.

The question
Users needed a fast, trustworthy place to run loan, mortgage, retirement, and currency calculations — no sign-up, no ads, no data collection — with instant, animated results that feel clear and reassuring rather than overwhelming.

What I found
The finished suite loads instantly, ranks well for calculator searches thanks to server rendering, and turns dense financial math into a calm, animated experience people actually enjoy using instead of dreading.

Mintledger started from a small frustration: every financial calculator I opened online felt like it was designed to intimidate. Harsh navy blues, cramped tables, walls of fine print. I wanted to build something a person could open on their lunch break, plug in a loan amount, and actually understand what they were looking at without squinting.

The first real decision was color. Banking sites default to navy and red because they think it signals "trustworthy," but I kept coming back to soft, pastel palettes — the kind fintech apps have been quietly moving toward for a couple of years now. I sketched out a few directions: a sage-and-mint combination, a lavender one, a warm sand-and-sky pairing. Mint won. It felt calm without feeling unserious, and it gave me a natural way to color-code gains versus interest paid without resorting to alarming red.

Typography took longer than I expected. I tried clean grotesks first — Inter, Manrope — and they were fine, but fine wasn't the point. I wanted the result numbers, the actual dollar figures, to feel like something worth looking at. I landed on pairing a serif, Lora, for headings and the hero numbers, with Inter carrying the labels and body text underneath. Setting the payment amount in italic serif instead of a flat sans-serif number changed the whole feel of the interface — it stopped looking like a spreadsheet and started looking like a statement.

The logo went through six rounds before I settled on it. I wanted something that didn't need the words "mint" or "ledger" spelled out in the icon to make sense, so I built a simple three-bar mark — like a tiny bar chart, or a stack of ledger entries, depending on how you look at it. It's simple enough to survive being shrunk down to a 16-pixel favicon, which mattered more than I initially gave it credit for.

The last piece was motion. Static numbers on a calculator page always felt dead to me, so I animated everything that could reasonably move — sliders react instantly, results count up and down instead of snapping, and each page opens with a few soft shapes drifting behind the heading, slow enough to feel alive without being distracting.

Building Mintledger wasn't really about the math. The formulas are the easy part. It was about proving that a financial tool doesn't have to look like a bank statement to be taken seriously.
